The purpose of the department is to educate and train students to become accomplished professionals in the fields of journalism and communication. It prepares them to perform critical and challenging roles in finding out the truth of complicated situations, usually under a time constraint, and communicating to the public in an accurate, clear and engaging way. It hopes to empower people, practitioners, analysts, scholars and media consumers to understand media’s role it play in the society and state; and to value its ethical responsibilities.
Diverse individual, cultural and intellectual perspectives are at the heart of our values. We want to prepare our students in such a way so that they can treat people in their real life interactions with sensitivity, honesty and respect.
We believe our mission at the JCMS department is grounded in the Article 39 of the constitution of Bangladesh, which encourages freedom thought, freedom of expression, and freedom of communication; and give us a unique responsibility to serve the needs of a democratic society where diverse voices are represented and counted.
We are committed to provide a world class education to our students so that they become better producers and consumers of public information, strengthen their understanding of the role of communication in their personal, professional and civic lives, and prepare them for private and public-sector leadership positions in journalism, communication and other fields.
We believe the best journalism can play a vital role to reflect and transmit society’s values and to promote public accountability of the powerful and encourage a well-informed citizenry.
