The Department of Sociology at Varendra University organized a highly impactful Special Lecture on “The Idea of Development: Paradox and Human Security” on Monday, 25th November 2024. The keynote speaker for the occasion was Dr. Khairul Chowdhury, a renowned Professor from the Department of Sociology, University of Dhaka.
The lecture focused on the complex and paradoxical relationship between development initiatives and human security in the context of Bangladesh, exploring how certain development paradigms often lead to unintended socio-economic vulnerabilities. Dr. Chowdhury highlighted that while development is meant to enhance human well-being, it sometimes exacerbates inequalities, displaces vulnerable populations, and undermines societal stability.
