Department of Pharmacy, Varendra University arranged daylong seminar and rally to celebrate the first "World antibiotic resistance awareness week", 16th to 22nd November 2015 declared by World Health Organization (WHO). Worldwide antibiotic resistance due to the misuse of antibiotic is creating dangerous conditions like AIDS. For this reason from this year, WHO decided to observe worldwide 16th to 22nd November as "Antibiotic resistance awareness week".
In the seminar arranged by Department of Pharmacy, Varendra University the lecturer of the department Mr. G.M. Masud Parvez presented his survey research on misuse of antibiotic in Rajshahi, Jessore, Khulna and Comilla district. The result of the study showed that, in 2013 about 64% of the patient at Rajshahi district was prescribed one or more antibiotic without any test for identification of micro-organisms and also prescribed antibiotics for 31% of the patient in common cold syndrome which is unnecessary according to WHO guild lines.
In the seminar the causes and ways to prevent antibiotic resistance was broadly presented by lecturer of the department Mr. Md. Sanowar Hossain. The seminar was chaired by the coordinator of the department Professor Dr. Ashik MosaddiK. In his speech, he highlighted the role of general public to doctor, nurse, pharmacist and drug manufacturer for the prevention of antibiotic resistance.
Department of Pharmacy, Varendra University arrange the seminar for the first time in Bangladesh considering the dangerous condition of antibiotic resistance in future. At the end of the seminar, the students and teachers of the department participated a rally at Talaimari campus with the slogan of "Use antibiotic wisely" and declared that festoons will be hanged on different hospital and clinics to make people aware on the right use of antibiotics.
