Environmental Hazards of Plastic Wastes

Authors

Abstract
Global plastic waste (PW) generation has significantly increased with its widespread application in various sectors which leads to subsequent critical concerns of health and environmental sustainability. However, landfill, open burning, and dumping is the common fate of waste plastics which ultimately causes adverse damage to the ecosystem. Waste-to-energy conversion by recycling waste plastic to liquid fuel is one of the promising means to treat the huge pile of waste. Liquid fuel production acts as a trade-off to meet energy demand from waste as well as utilize the mismanaged PW. This chapter aims to cover the available technologies related to the conversion of PW into liquid fuel, and special attention is given to ecofriendly technologies and policies to promote environmental safety issues. Moreover, this study sheds light on the challenges and benefits associated with the production of liquid fuel from PW, and their contribution to circular economy.
