IoT and Smart City Solutions for Sustainable Waste Management: Empowering Green Governance Through Technology in Urban Bangladesh

Authors
Md. Moinuddin Zahangir
Abstract
The rapid urbanization in Bangladesh has led to significant challenges in solid waste management, with traditional systems struggling to meet the growing demands of urban centers. This study explores the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in revolutionizing waste management practices, focusing on their role in enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and citizen engagement. By analyzing global case studies from cities such as Barcelona, Singapore, and New York, this research demonstrates how IoT solutions, such as smart bins, real-time data analytics, and waste-to-energy technologies, can optimize waste collection, reduce operational costs, and promote recycling efforts. However, the adoption of these technologies in Bangladesh faces several barriers, including financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, a lack of technical expertise, and limited public awareness. The study identifies these challenges and provides recommendations for overcoming them, emphasizing the need for pilot projects, cost-effective solutions, and capacity-building initiatives.
