A Modern Ethical Dilemma: Social Pressure vs. Religious Guidance in Determining Mahr

A fundamental element of Islamic marriage contracts, mahr, or môhrana in Bengali, is meant to be a symbolic but legally binding present from the husband to the bride. The modern practice of deciding mahr has become a contentious domain affected by sociocultural expectations, economic constraints, and changing marital conventions, despite its roots in Islamic precepts that emphasize women's autonomy, dignity, and financial stability. The conflict between religious instruction and social pressure while establishing mahr in South Asian Muslim societies, particularly Bangladesh, is examined in this research-focused essay. The article illustrates how mahr frequently transforms from a spiritual act of respect to a social performance of prestige, creating moral conundrums that impact families and, most crucially, women. It does this by combining classical law, sociological viewpoints, feminist readings, and empirical trends. In order to bring mahr practices into line with the moral principles of the Islamic tradition, it finishes with thoughts on reform, community education, and policy recommendations.
